This facility is provided by Welsh Local Authorities for school governors and clerks in Wales to get information and knowledge which would otherwise be difficult for them to access because of an inability to attend scheduled training and development sessions. The mandatory training regulations (see note below) which came into force on 20th September 2013 make it a statutory duty for school governors in Wales to receive certain prescribed training.

The information provided herein is not intended to replace the face-to-face training organised by Local Authorities or Consortia or in school, but may be used to supplement this and it offers an opportunity for governors and clerks to undertake training if they are unable to attend programmed sessions. Governors and clerks should make every effort to attend scheduled training in order to take advantage of the networking opportunities this provides, to ask questions and to share their knowledge and experience with others.

For access to courses please contact your Local Authority Governor Support Officer for a user name and password. Each time you access the site thereafter, your work will be logged and on completion a certificate demonstrating proof of that will be issued in your name.

Mandatory training regulations are described in The Government of Maintained Schools (Training Requirements for Governors) (Wales) Regulations 2013.

School governors who fail to attend the statutory training within the prescribed time must be suspended from all governing body duties until such training has been completed. Failure to complete statutory training within six months of suspension leads to disqualification as a governor of any school in Wales.
